I am primarily a visual artist and I often find ways of showing my work theatrically. I am also interested in combining words and images, and quite often I make books and stories.
When making work I try to listen to my instincts and not be swayed by what is fashionable or sellable at any given time. I work in a shed in my backyard, and I enjoy working on my own as well as collaborating with other people. Much of my work is for small audiences because I like to give people individual and special experiences that will stay with them.
In my participatory work I am particularly interested in those who find themselves on the margins for one reason or another. I believe that being part of a creative process can improve people's self-confidence, and I aim to create supportive atmospheres where people - especially those with little faith in themselves - can flourish.
I like to work in an open-ended way so that everyone involved can follow their own impulses and find individual ways of expressing themselves.
The photograph on the left is of a little house in the woods which I originally made as a peep box for The Miracle Show.
The photograph on the right (taken by Kevin Hughes) is of the late Mickeleen McCarthy, who was an inspiring participant in the Travelers' Art Project on Winterbourne Travelers' site, near Bristol.
