How was it for you?

How was it for you?How was it for you?

How was it for you thumbnailAs we know, 2020 was a very strange year with many people suffering loss and limitations, whilst at the same time being enriched by unexpectedly humble things. I lost most of my work as a self employed artist, and my sense of a professional identity left with it. However, over the months I’ve developed different ways to support my own and other people’s creativity, and gained a positive sense of my adapting practice.

So as the extraordinary year of 2020 started to turn, I asked people to reflect on it by responding to two questions:
How was it for you?
I found myself thinking about Janus, the Roman god of gateways and transitions. Janus is where our word January comes from and he is usually depicted as having two faces, one looking back into the old year and the other looking forward into the new one, which for me resonated with the dualities of our current situation.

There were no right or wrong answers – they just needed to be true at the point of writing. I have felt the loss of different things at different times: in the summer I particularly missed going to visit family and friends in France, and right now I am missing welcoming friends and family into my home.

I felt privileged to receive people’s open and heartfelt responses and send a big thank you to everyone who contributed. I have edited some of the contributions but I hope that I have kept the essence of what was being said.
