We are still touring Bookshed so if you are interested in booking it please e-mail me
via the contact on this site.
When seen from the outside, Bookshed is a small, wooden shed. There is nothing that gives away the secret of what waits within.
The Keeper of the Books, pictured here played by Brenda Waite, invites the audience into the shed two at a time. They step into a little room and seat themselves at a polished wooden table. The Keeper then offers them a choice of books, which they sit and read.
Each book is hand-made and unique, rich in imagery and texture. The tales are bound together through their themes of desire and compulsion.
They include Escapology which tells of a journey - drawn on maps and hidden in a suitcase.
Planting Hair has fragile pages, stitched together and trimmed with stolen locks.
The image shown on this page is an illustration from Lonely Hunter the tale of a wolf who steals a child and lives to regret it.
As the audience leave, the Keeper offers them a memento to remember their experience by.
With financial assistance from the Arts Council of England, Bookshed has toured to different settings ranging from galleries to woodlands.
What people have said about Bookshed...
There was a queue to get in throughout the afternoon and always smiling faces exiting post-show.
I was impressed at how simple the show was to set up yet the attention to detail that it contained.
The idea behind the piece was original and engaging and worked well at combining literature, visual
arts and street theatre. As such, it was perfect for our programme. The handmade books were innovative,
beautifully made as well as very funny - I chose the sinister SnipSnip the Wigmaker which made me howl.
I loved the way the piece could play to all ages and to all types of people and though avant-garde,
was completely unpretentious.
